South Street Elementary School Partnership

77% of the students at this Title I school live at or below the poverty line. They perform below state averages, and – with many from homes where English is not a first language - particularly struggle with reading.

Goals: Bolster students’ reading and other academic skills; assist in building beautification; support Parent-Teacher Association activities

Volunteer opportunities: Reading Buddies and team leaders; mentors; facilities support (painting, small building projects, etc., as approved); misc: drive coordinators, meal prep, etc.

Great Plain Elementary School PARTNERSHIP

Jericho added this school to its CityServe initiatives in January 2018, in response to requests to expand our program. In this location, Jericho volunteers work with small groups of students in the classroom, under the guidance of the classroom teacher.

Goals: Help students achieve their academic goals, and boost their self-esteem, by tutoring them during classroom assignments, becoming an extension of the teacher's arms

Volunteer opportunity: Serve in kindergarten, 1st, or 5th grade classrooms, in one-hour blocks, between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays

Project CleanStart

Danbury’s chronic homeless residents participate in this job-readiness program, where they earn compensation and learn invaluable job & life skills by engaging in downtown clean-up and other city-run projects.

Goals: Infuse hope and self-esteem; equip participants for the job market; move them from struggling and homeless to employed and housed.

Volunteer opportunities:  Job coaches and team leaders to work directly with our CleanStart work participants.

Jericho Spring Street Neighborhood Center

This center is in the midst of one of the city’s lowest-income neighborhoods, as a beacon of love, compassion and care.

Goals: Build community and inspire neighborhood improvement; provide programs and activities, primarily for children, but for newborns to seniors; offer case management for families in need.

Volunteer opportunities: After-school tutors for grades K-5; summer camp counselors and leaders; bible study teachers, extra-curricular teachers, people to work in our food pantry and clothing bank.
