South Street Elementary School Partnership
77% of the students at this Title I school live at or below the poverty line. They perform below state averages, and – with many from homes where English is not a first language - particularly struggle with reading.
Goals: Bolster students’ reading and other academic skills; assist in building beautification; support Parent-Teacher Association activities
Volunteer opportunities: Reading Buddies and team leaders; mentors; facilities support (painting, small building projects, etc., as approved); misc: drive coordinators, meal prep, etc.
Danbury’s chronic homeless residents participate in this job-readiness program, where they earn compensation and learn invaluable job & life skills by engaging in downtown clean-up and other city-run projects.
Goals: Infuse hope and self-esteem; equip participants for the job market; move them from struggling and homeless to employed and housed.
Volunteer opportunities: Job coaches and team leaders to work directly with our CleanStart work participants.
Jericho Spring Street Neighborhood Center
This center is in the midst of one of the city’s lowest-income neighborhoods, as a beacon of love, compassion and care.
Goals: Build community and inspire neighborhood improvement; provide programs and activities, primarily for children, but for newborns to seniors; offer case management for families in need.
Volunteer opportunities: After-school tutors for grades K-5; summer camp counselors and leaders; bible study teachers, extra-curricular teachers, people to work in our food pantry and clothing bank.
